Amy Grebe Awarded Landrum-Hirsch Nursing Scholarship

Amy Grebe Awarded Landrum-Hirsch Nursing Scholarship

0

Parkland Health Center Foundation is very pleased to announce Amy Grebe as the recipient of the Landrum-Hirsch Memorial nursing scholarship. Amy is a nursing student at Mineral Area College. The scholarship awards a total of $2,000 divided between two semesters.

Grebe is from Bismarck, and is currently pursuing an associate of science degree with a major in practical nursing. She will graduate in July with her licensed practical nursing certificate (LPN), and has already been accepted into the bridge program at Mineral Area College. Amy is on track to complete her associate degree nursing (RN) in fall 2018.

Amy works part-time as a scribe with PhysAssist in the emergency department at Parkland Health Center. In this position, she is gaining invaluable career experience. She explained, “My job is to go with the doctor, listen as he or she examines and interviews the patient, capture all pertinent information for each patient visit and document the patient’s entire encounter in the Emergency Department.” Amy is interested in all aspects of nursing, and has a goal of working in an Emergency Department or a nursing home in the future.

Amy has an underlying desire to help people and considered teaching as a career. Part of what drove her decision to consider nursing was her first-hand experience being cared for by a home health nurse as she recovered from an illness while in third grade. "Seeing how nurses work really solidified it for me,” she said.

Amy recalls how she felt when she learned about the scholarship award. “I was pleasantly surprised that I was selected for this scholarship, and I am very appreciative,” Amy said. “The scholarship is especially helpful to me as a single mom.” Amy has three children, 9, 12 and 14. She explained that when she was faced with a life-changing situation, she had a choice, and she wanted her children to see that she chose to be empowered rather than destroyed. She stated, “So I went back to school and will not stop until my dream of becoming a nurse is fulfilled no matter what life chooses to throw at me.”

The Parkland Health Center Foundation is a 501(c)3 charitable organization that was established in 2009. Its mission is to secure philanthropic support to enhance Parkland’s ability to provide excellent care with great compassion.

The Landrum Hirsch Memorial Scholarship was created by the foundation board in order to honor Stuart Landrum, Sr. and Jack Hirsch. Both gentlemen were instrumental in founding Farmington Community Hospital, one of the predecessors of Parkland Health Center. The scholarship began in 2009 and is awarded annually to a deserving nursing student at Mineral Area College.
