Labor can be overwhelming for many expectant moms, so having a support person present can help create a sense of calm and reassurance throughout the entire labor and delivery process.
For Summer Frederick of Arcadia Valley, Mo., that was a major concern as her due date approached. She wasn’t sure if her support person – her husband, Austin, who was deployed with the U.S. Army in Poland – would make it back in time for the birth of their baby.
So, when Summer arrived at Parkland Health Center and learned she was in labor, she was thankful for the night shift nurse, who helped her get settled and provided that much-needed support and guidance until her mother and sister arrived. As her labor progressed and neared the delivery phase, Austin was able to video call in so he could witness the birth of their son.
“I was so touched that Austin was able to witness the delivery and interact with the doctor and nurses, even from so far away,” said Summer. “It was such a special moment, and I’m glad he didn’t end up missing it. It was truly a great labor and delivery experience at Parkland.”
A healthy Waylon Joseph Frederick was born weighing six pounds and measuring 18.75 inches. Both Summer and Austin were overjoyed! Better yet, Austin was able to fly home just days later to meet baby Waylon in person.
