Midwifery care is now available at Parkland Health Center! Dr. Kimberly Borchers, a Parkland family physician who delivers babies, and Jessica Fraire, a certified nurse midwife, provide insight into this new service at our Childbirth Center.
What is a certified nurse midwife (CNM)?
A CNM is a registered nurse with advanced training in midwifery. They provide care during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, along with services like birth control counseling, well-woman exams, and help with planning for pregnancy.
How is a midwife different from an OB/GYN?
Midwives focus on low-risk pregnancies and do not perform C-sections. Their approach centers on forming strong patient relationships and supporting natural births. CNMs also work closely with physicians when needed.
What type of care do midwives offer during pregnancy and after?
Midwifery care looks at the whole person, including physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. The goal is to provide support and education throughout the entire pregnancy and postpartum experience, helping patients feel informed and supported.
What does midwifery care include during labor and delivery?
Midwives offer continuous support during labor, including guidance with pain management, positioning, and assistance during pushing. They also take time to understand each patient’s birth preferences and support their plan.
What is the biggest benefit of working with a midwife?
The biggest benefit is receiving personalized, patient-centered care with the added peace of mind that midwives are part of a larger team that includes physicians. This ensures safe, well-rounded care throughout pregnancy and delivery.
Do midwives provide care after the baby is born?
Yes. Midwives continue to offer care in the weeks following birth, including breastfeeding support and can even care for newborns during the first 28 days of life.
Why is having midwifery care at Parkland important?
Midwifery care has been shown to improve outcomes for mothers and babies. It helps lower the risk of complications by focusing on education, support, and informed decision-making. Making this option available locally helps more families access the care they deserve.
